“Slate is a metamorphic rock formed from deposits of clay mud. As rocks eroded and were deposited underwater as mud, they were subjected to heat and pressure for hundreds of millions of years, thus forming several rock types. In order of compression, they are: clay, shale, slate, phyllite, and schist.
“The slate’s coloration is caused by mineral content. Green, burgundy and red are formed from iron rich mud. Black is due to its carbon content. Slate is quarried in Vermont and New York State as well as Brazil, China, Africa and India. It is long lasting, weather resistant and the colors unfading.” (reprinted from Stone Magazine)
Commonly used for roofing and walkways, this stone has found its way onto Sandra Miller's drawing table and is used in the most unusual, creative and graceful designs in the gift and art industries. Since 1989, her slate frames, clocks, mirrors, garden and home furnishings have been collected by museums, galleries, upscale gift and nature stores as well as catalog and interior design firms. Her large scale custom mirrors have been commissioned for country club and hotel lobbies and private homes. Her clocks can be used in any room of the home and on office desks. They make handsome corporate gifts and appeal to both women and men and all who need “grounding” in their environment.
